Showing Jumping Tips
-
Practice flatwork: Flatwork can help strengthen, supple, and make your horse easier to ride.
-
Communicate with your horse: Use body language to communicate with your horse. Horses communicate using body language, vocalizations, and physical cues.
-
Develop a good jumping position: A good jumping position is important and can be guided by a riding instructor. Practice keeping a secure lower leg and a light seat.
-
Lose your reins: Jumping without reins can help you develop an independent seat and stay over the horse's center of gravity.
-
Be patient: Patience is important for creating a bond with your horse and for success.
-
Protect your hands: Use gloves to protect your hands from the horse's reins.
-
Start with low fences: Start with low fences and add height and more fences as you develop.
-
Practice at home: Practice at home and stick with what you know at shows.
-
Get your horse used to the placing pole: This will help your horse use their feet in pairs for an even take-off.
-
Start with ground poles: Before jumping over obstacles, train your horse to walk, trot, and canter over poles on the ground.
