Dressage Tips
-
Practice transitions to sharpen up going and down through the gaits. Rhythm, tempo and consistency equals harmony.
-
Remember how many beats each gait has and practice feeling them.
-
Center lines: Accuracy is key, meet your markers and don’t give those judges a reason to deduct marks.
-
A smile might get you that extra mark.
-
Learn the test: Know the test well in advance of the competition.
-
Practice your walk: Push your horse's walk forward to create a big overtrack and stretch.
-
Read the directives: Understand which movements are worth double marks and practice them.
-
Bend correctly: Maintain an upright position and keep your shoulders level.
-
Keep your head up: This will help you maintain stability.
-
Learn the arena letters: Use letters to learn dressage programs and prepare for badges.
-
Ride good circles: Accurate circles will improve your dressage scores and your horse's suppleness.
-
Use your corners: Ride into the corners to give yourself more time and set your horse up for the next movement.
-
Hold your nerve: Don't take things too seriously and remember that any progress is positive.
